What does Academic Integrity mean?

Academic integrity is not just about avoiding plagiarism, it is about being truthful and ethical in the ways in which you use information in your writing and research throughout your course at the University of Galway. Academic integrity is “a commitment to six fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage” and is essential in achieving a responsible learning and research environment (ICAI, 2021, p. 4).

As generative AI tools are used more, we strongly encourage students to check with their lecturers if the use of such tools is permitted. If so, how may they be used and how can students cite them? Failing to confirm these details beforehand could risk academic misconduct.

You should be aware of the University's Academic Integrity Policy which describes academic misconduct and the associated consequences. More information and guidance on Academic Integrity is available on the University's Academic Integrity page.

How can the Library support you in maintaining your Academic Integrity?

The Library’s Academic Skills Service and  Academic Writing Centre (AWC) focus on providing support around citing and referencing, accessing, using, and critically evaluating the information for your assignments or research and academic writing. Support is provided through free workshops both online and in-person as well as one-to-one support.

Guides & Resources

Additionally, we have created guides and resources to complement our workshops. We encourage you to use these throughout your studies.
